We are recruiting Ph.D. students in Counseling Psychology for Dr. Lisa McAndrew’s team at the Division of Psychology at the University at Albany. The student will join Dr. Lisa McAndrew’s Behavioral Health Research Laboratory. We are looking for students with a passion for becoming researchers and who will fit into our collaborative, happy and productive culture. Dr. McAndrew’s team conducts research on individuals’ views of their health and develops innovative patient-centered behavioral interventions. Students working on Dr. McAndrew’s team have opportunities to be involved in research being conducted at the University at Albany and also at the Veterans Affairs in New Jersey. Current projects at the University at Albany include a meta-analysis of self-management for medically unexplained symptoms and a longitudinal study of predictors of student veterans’ success. Current projects at the Veterans Affairs include a multi-site randomized controlled trial of telephone delivered Problem-Solving Therapy for Gulf War Illness and a multi-site prospective longitudinal study of doctor patient relationship. Students have opportunities to lead pilot studies that will lead to funding and also be involved in nationally funded studies. This includes being on an interdisciplinary team consisting of Psychologists, Social Workers and Medical Doctors. Students will learn skills to becoming a researcher including contributing to ongoing manuscript writing efforts and taking the lead in developing their own manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed journals. They will also receive training in grant writing.
The Division of Counseling Psychology at the University at Albany is consistently ranked as one of the top Counseling Psychology programs in the United States. In addition to the training students receive on Dr. McAndrew’s team – students are trained by some of the top faculty in the country in challenging classes and clinical settings. Students have opportunities to receive clinical training through our training clinic where they are supervised by our faculty and also in community organizations. Our students receive some of the best training and this is reflected in our high internship match rates and licensure pass rates.
